Saturday: April '17 Update

April flew by, and I mean that literally because the weather was insane. Hot one day, cold the next, a tornado warning and endless rain. Hopefully what comes of this is sunshine and warm spring days! Despite the rain, we had a lot going on in April.

In April, I…

Happy Friday friends!

If you follow me on Instagram, you will have seen this post where I revealed that Demas Designs is now on This was a huge step for me. Anytime I put of piece of my life and my work online there is a bit of vulnerability. Especially in this case, because The Knot is one of the top wedding website. My page on The Knot still needs some love, but I'm really happy to have taken this step. Hopefully, this means more good things are coming. Stay tuned for more wedding invite examples and samples!

DIY Wedding Wands

When it comes to wedding planning, there are some details that every bride can choose immediately. Then there are other details that can take longer to figure out. These can be as big as the dress and location or as small of a detail as the bridesmaids shoes. I am a decisive person, so wedding planning went pretty smoothly for me. But there were a handful times where the planning came to a screeching halt because I wasn't sure which choice was the best. One of these times was definitely for a small detail. So small, it's almost laughable now; but as a bride, to me, this was a make it or break it. Ready? Drumroll please,….. What will our guest throw when we make out grand entrance our of the church? Life-changing choice, amiright?

Rice? No, that's bad for birds. Bird seed? No, that's not attractive. Confetti? No, that just seems messy and difficult to organize. Bubbles? No, it's becoming a cliché. Nothing? No, that's just boring.

I wanted to do something different, but not odd. Friends starting giving me suggestions from weddings they have been to recently. One friend suggested flower petals. I liked the idea, but that was just going to raise my flower budget. Another friend said glitter, but that seemed messier than confetti. I was definitely putting too much thought into this, and I knew that in the moment.

Eventually, I stumbled upon photos from my cousins wedding a couple of years prior. They had distributed ribbon wands to their guests. When they exited the church, everyone waved the wands, twirling the ribbons around. It created a sea of swirling colors. It produced some of the most beautiful photos! I had finally made my decision. The downside? Every place online I found was charging so much for something I knew I could make myself. So I did.

This was the easiest DIY I have ever done. So grab a glass of wine, find a show you need to catch up on, (I chose Younger) and get to work!

Kaleidoscope Spinning Turns One!

On this day, one year ago, I posted this, my first blog post. Thus began a year of many changes and many adventures.

Top: Mossimo (similar here and here) | Tank: Merona | Skirt: Mossimo (similar here and here) | Shoes: Mossimo | Watch: Old Tommy Hilfiger (similar here and here) | Sunglasses: American Eagle | Nail Polish: Essie | Lips: CoverGirl | Balloon: Pink Antlers Studio

Words cannot truly describe how incredibly the last year has been, but I'm going to do my best!

I should start by thanking all of my friends and followers who have supported me throughout the past year on this fun adventure. The positive response I have gotten from everyone has been overwhelming and just absolutely wonderful! I couldn't be happier! In addition to the blog, this is also the anniversary of my Etsy Page.

I constantly go back and forth about which was more of a risk; my blog or my Etsy page. Both have required to me to be vulnerable and transparent. I've put myself out there in my writing, my photos and my designs; Open to judgment, critique, and potential failure. Kaleidoscope Spinning was born from a need for change. I've had this call inside of me to do this for quite some time, but ignored it for years.

Finally, one year ago, I decided I was tired for waiting. I had dreams and goals and I decided to stop waiting for someone else to tell me it was okay to chase them.

I've learned a lot about myself this year, as I am sure you guys have too. It's been a wonderful year, filled with some amazing memories. But now, onto the future. I have some big plans for the next year, specifically the next few months, and I am so excited to get started!

Set Your Intention: Perspective

This week, my intention was Perspective.

My reason for choosing this as my intention was two-fold.  First, to encourage the reminder that everyone in this world is on their own journey, has had their own experiences and as a result has their own personal perspective of the world. Assumption and lack of communication are true killers, We all perceive the world differently. We've all lived different lives and as a result, we have different values. It is essential to understand that before getting mad at someone for not believing what you believe.

Second, I needed the personal reminder to not sweat the small things in life. I am a very anxious person. The smallest thing can send my day into a downward spiral and it is just unpleasant. It can be a struggle, but I am trying to keep my perspective and question how this small blip will effect my future. More often than not, it wouldn't change a thing.

Set Your Intention: Second Chances

Welcome to Set Your Intention, a new series on Kaleidoscope Spinning. In this series, I will be discussing my Yoga Intention for the past week.

This week, my intention was second chances.

This intention was inspired by the few days following the New Year. On Jan.1 many people wake up with their resolutions on the mind. But unfortunately, and usually unintentionally, people drop their resolution far too quickly. But the thing I believe many people forget is it's perfectly okay to try again. There is nothing wrong with picking up a dropped resolution in April, June, or November. You don't need a "new year" to create a "new me". You need determination, a positive attitude, and the willingness to fail and try again.

So take a second chance on yourself. It will be worth it in the end.

"Life always offers you a second chance. It's called tomorrow."

Our Travel Board

Several years ago, I began a travel board as a way to document our travels over the years. So far, we have traveled to 13 states. The majority of the photos documenting the first time we had been there together. I love the idea of watching ourselves get older as we explore more of the country and add photos to the board. Our goal, of course, is to hit all 50 states, including D.C.

It is definitely one of our favorite pieces we have in our home and it gets a lot of comments from family and friends. Below is the step by step process to make your own! Trust me, it's easier than you think!

The supplies you will need:

  • A Bulletin Board
  • A Map
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Brush
  • Rubber Cement
  • Pencil
  • Tissue Paper
  • Glue stick
  • Cardstock paper
  • Pushpins
  • Pictures!

Ed Note: Make sure to take opportunity to measure the states before you print photos. States like Texas and California are likely to require a larger photo printed.

1) Cut out the map.

2) Paint the bulletin board. Let it dry. I chose black for a neutral background.

3) Use the rubber cement to glue the cut out map to the board.

4) Use the tissue paper to trace out the state. Cut it out.

5) Glue the picture to the cardstock paper to make it thicker. Once dry, cut out the picture.

Position the tissue paper state cutout on the photo. Tape it down. Cut around the tissue paper. This will ensure your photo is the same size as the state.

6) Position the tissue paper state cutout on the photo. Tape it down.   Cut around the tissue paper. This will ensure your photo is the same size as the state.

7) Glue push pins to the back of the state. {We also like to write down where we were exactly in the state and the date.)

8) Push the pins into the map and you're done!

I hope you take the time to try out this DIY! It's an ongoing project that inspires Steve and I to travel and explore!

Home Envy: Sutton Foster's Dressing Room

Today, I am introducing a new series to Kaleidoscope Spinning: Home Envy. Here, we will take a look at the interiors of beautiful homes. First up Sutton Foster's Dressing Room.

Okay, so I know it's not officially a home, but as the article reminds us, a dressing room can be the second home for an accomplished actress/singer/dancer.  The beauty of this space is bright and colorful decor, mixed in with the practicality of the furniture.

Isn't it all gorgeous! Give me inspiration for my own living room.

Boulder, Colorado: KS x CO

Last month we took a quick road trip out to Boulder, Colorado.  It was an 8 hour drive, but it was completely worth it because we had a wonderful time! The first place we went to was  Pearl Street. It was a long street in the middle of Boulder filled with local shops and boutiques. We had a wonderful time flowing in and out of stores. We followed it up with dinner at a local brewery.

The next day we woke up early to hike the Flatirons. As we got to the top, the views were amazing! But we struggled in the beginning. The altitude definitely got to us very quickly. It was amazing to see locals so casually climb up and down this mountains while Steve and I were panting and chugging water!

After the hike we took a wonderful, relaxing break. It was just nice to just be completely lazy!

But then that evening, after dinner we went the Gilmore Guys Live Show. I have made it no secret how much I love Gilmore Girls and have mentioned several times how much I love the Gilmore Guys podcasts. So I was thrilled to get to see one of their live shows!

Not only that but I got to meet them too! I was definitely semi-starstuck to meet my favorite podcasters!

It was a great trip and I am so happy we were able to make it out there. Colorado was the 5th new states we've visited this year!

The Other Side of my 20s

Today, I celebrate my 26th birthday. I am officially in the latter half of my 20s. (Not to be confused with my late 20s. That begins at 27!) Despite any technicalities of when my late 20s begin, I have found myself very reflective this birthday. I keep thinking back to when I was 16…

birthday_16My Sweet 16th Birthday

My parents threw me a big Sweet Sixteen Birthday Party. The house was filled with family and friends, most of whom had known me my entire life. It was a wonderful party and a great way to start what would be a very transformative year. Two weeks after my party, I got my drivers license and officially became the first of my friends to do so. Two months later, I performed in my first improv show at my high school. This show became the first of many. Just weeks after that show, I landed a coveted spot in my high school's Variety Show Comedy Team; as dream of mine since I started high school.

My 16th year came with some wonderful highlights, but in turn, I was also hit with some low moments. I found chemistry impossible and French was just not sticking. Pressure to do better in school was amplified by the beginning of my college research. If I was going to go to a good school and get the degree I wanted, I needed to start working harder. On top of this, I was dealing with some issues with my groups of friends. This later turned into me leaving the group in pursuit of a better one.

birthday_18My 18th Birthday

I didn't know it at the time, but I now consider that year to be my first real year of life.

It was the first year I had to start really considering my future. It was the first year my actions could drastically effect that future. It was the first year I made some amazing new friends, and let go of some terrible ones.  It was the first year I began to set personal goals, and more importantly began to achieve them!

birthday_21My 21st Birthday

No year of my life has ever been perfect; each year has come with highs and lows, achievements and failures, rewards and rejections. And while some years can be better than others, each year came with a healthy balance of some very real moments.

So here I am with a solid 10 years of life experiences behind me. Life definitely didn't go the way little 16-year-old Helen thought; and thank goodness for it! I am braver, stronger, and happier than I could have imagined.

So cheers to 26! May it be filled with some beautiful moments!

Summer 2016 Bucket List Recap

Three months ago I posted my Summer 2016 Bucket List. Sadly, summer has officially come to the end because tomorrow is the autumnal equinox, the official first day of fall. And while the weather in KC may still say summer, I am ready for sweater weather and pumpkin everything!

Below, I have a recap of what we were able to accomplish this summer!

1: Travel to Northern California. We did! I joined Steve on his work trip to San Francisco and had the best time. You can see all of the pictures here!

3: Attend a Big Summer Concert We almost didn't make this one, but then in late August we attended a Def Leppard Concert with some of Steve's coworkers. We were definitely the youngest people there, but it was still an awesome concert! Their openers were Tesla and REO Speedwagon.

img_86044: Being the House Hunt. Not only did we begin the house hunt, but we found the house and closed last week! Moving soon!

5: Learn to Make Ice Cream. We received an ice cream maker as a wedding gift in the summer of 2015 and we finally used it! I made some delicious chocolate ice cream! With fall beginning, I'm looking forward to trying out some pumpkin and apple flavors!

6: Continue to grow my Etsy Page. Since I posted this bucket list in June, I have added 38 new listings! And there is so much more to come!

Alaska_117: Hiking in Alaska. Truly one of the best experiences of my life! We hiked up 4600ft elevation and a round trip total of about 10 miles. The entire trip took 6 hours; 4 hours up and 2 down. Such an accomplishment. And yes, we could barely move the next day! Pictures here and here.

Saturdaze: August Update

The best part about August just being home in Kansas City. July was filled with travel, including all of Steve's work trips. But in August, he was home for two full weeks, and we definitely made the most of it! I can't remember the last time we were this busy with social engagements. It just felt like everyday there was something knew to go to; Concert, 5K, yoga, Wine Opener, and more! Needless to say, August was a lot of fun! In August, I…

Watched: Continuing Breaking Bad (almost done!) and watched Stranger Things. So amazing!!!

Wore: Soaking up every opportunity to wear shorts and sundresses before fall begins!

Heard: I've been listening to this song on repeat over and over and over.

Read: What Alice Forgot and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Traveled: Drove up to Iowa to visit my in-laws. Weekends in small towns are always so nice!

Saw: Nerve and War Dogs. We also went to a concert with Steve's coworkers. We saw Tesla, REO Speedwagon, and Def Leppard!

News: I completed my CorePower Teacher Training classes! So happy and proud to have spent my summer working towards this goal!

September is expected to be an exciting month. We have a trip to Boulder planned, we close on our house, and my birthday! :)
